Biz Institute for Youth

The Biz Institute for Youth is designed to introduce young people, ages 13-24, to the world of business.  Young people have  extraordinary potential for business achievement and possess the qualities of the successful entrepreneur, such as the willingness to take risks and resilience in adversity.  By making business both interesting and comprehensible, this program seeks to encourage its students to participant in their respective local economies and become productive members of the society at large.

Youth Entrepreneurs will develop or build on an idea for a business that they are able to start and run as a young person.  They will experience:

  • a community assessment
  • a wholesale trip
  • the 4P's:  Product, Packaging, Pricing and Promotion
  • a sale day
  • personal and business financial education
  • developing a personal and business budget
  • developing their own business plan
  • network among peers and build professional contacts

Each class session includes activities, guest speakers, business plan coaches, presentation skill building and public speaking.

The culmination of this program is participating in the Regional NFTE Business Plan Competition.  This is a competition with all the other schools and community based organizations in Southern California.  The winner of this competition receives a paid trip to New York to compete in the National Business Plan Competition.  Quite often that students business is show cased on National Television such as CNN. Each competion has monetary awards for the winners.

This program requires parent/guardian support.  Parents will serve as volunteer chaperones on field trips.
