THE STATE OF STUDENTS LA PROGRAM OVERVIEW

 

A STUDENT-LED PERSPECTIVE ON EQUITY, SAFETY, AND OPPORTUNITY

The State of Students in Los Angeles report is a groundbreaking youth-led study conducted by and for students across Los Angeles County.

Through a powerful student-designed survey completed by more than 450 students, this report lifts up the real experiences, challenges, and hopes of young learners navigating school, safety, housing and mental health.

KEY FINDINGS

Safety & Community Violence:

  • Over 50% of students have been affected by gun violence and 41% have witnessed or experienced gang activity.
  • While most feel safe at school, only 42% feel safe walking in their neighborhood.

Housing Instability:

  • Nearly 1 in 4 students report living in temporary or unstable housing.
  • 34% worry about eviction or overcrowding—issues that deeply impact academic and emotional well-being.

Mental Health & Wellness:

  • Although 90% of students report having a trusted adult at school, 118 students never use mental health services, and access remains inconsistent.
  • Stigma, staffing shortages, and lack of visibility are key barriers.

Equity & Fair Treatment:

  • 228 students said they have felt unsafe due to their race, gender or background.
  • Over 100 students report being treated unfairly by school staff based on their identity.

College & Career Readiness:

  • Encouragingly, 87% of students feel their schools prepare them for college or careers
  • Gaps persist, however, for those unsure or disconnected from pathway opportunities.
