Robert Zardeneta

Vice President of Programs

As Vice President of Programs, Robert brings vast experience and knowledge, as a seasoned leader in the Los Angeles nonprofit community. Known for his zest in driving toward positive change, Robert has a distinguished track record in fostering collaborations with local, national and even international stakeholders to promote economic, educational and environmental gains.

Prior to joining the Los Angeles Urban League, Robert served as a Senior Manager of Green Workforce under both, former LA Mayor Eric Garcetti and the current Mayor Karen Bass. In this role he contributed to the city’s Green New Deal, by creating equitable job pathways and leading a Just Transition Task Force to support the shift from fossil fuels to sustainable industries. Robert’s expertise extended globally through collaboration with the C40 network, assisting nine cities worldwide in developing just transition strategies. He also contributed to the initial design of LA’s Building Decarbonization and Green Workforce strategies.

Dedicated to improving education also, as the Executive Director of LA CAUSA, Robert developed an award-winning program for students, ages 16-24 years-old, who were excluded from traditional school systems. His program featured STEM curriculum, college prep skills and sustainability training. This effort helped students achieve exceptional Academic Performance Index scores, drawing national recognition for its success.

During Robert’s tenure as Executive Director of CALÓ, Inc., he led community-driven initiatives in Boyle Heights, organizing young creatives, artists, and activists to advocate for transparency and engagement in local developments around Mariachi Plaza. The plaza has long served as a gateway to the Boyle Heights neighborhood and a gathering point for mariachi musicians hoping to get hired by visitors.

Robert describes himself as a “product of the Los Angeles Civil Rights Movement.” Born and raised in East Los Angeles, his father, a proud Chicano, fought tirelessly advocating for affirmative action in the city of Los Angeles’ Personnel Department in the late 60’s.
