Shannon D. Nelson

Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Special Projects

Shannon D. Nelson brings over two decades of professional expertise to her career, with a focus on External Affairs, Marketing & Communications, and Nonprofit Management. Shannon joined the Los Angeles Urban League in February 2021 and currently serves as the Vice President of Strategic Initiatives & Special Projects. She has also contributed her talents to organizations such as the YMCA of Metro Los Angeles, United Way of Greater Los Angeles and the City of Los Angeles. Shannon’s commitment to the community also extends to her involvement in various local nonprofit boards.

Early in her professional career, Shannon played pivotal roles in the administrations of Mayor Richard J. Riordan and Mayor James K. Hahn, where she spearheaded Small Business Procurement, Public Policy, Community and External Relations. Notably, she took the lead in organizing and managing the Cultural Affairs activities and fundraising for Black History Month events and initiatives across the City of Los Angeles.

Having been educated within the LAUSD public school system, Shannon proudly holds the distinction of being a fourth-generation graduate of an HBCU. Her academic accomplishments include a B.A. in Communications and Public Relations from Grambling State University in Louisiana, as well as an M.A. in Communications and Public Relations from Southern University and A&M College, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

Beyond her professional pursuits, Shannon’s heart lies in giving back. She is a founding board member of the LadyLike Foundation, an organization through which she dedicates her time to mentor and guide teenage girls. She also serves on the Boards of Stay Connected Life Ministries and The Ivy Heritage Foundation. Shannon and her husband, Rev. Douglas E. Nelson, serves together in ministry at TrueLA Church in South Los Angeles and resides in the vibrant Mid-City community in Los Angeles.
