The Los Angeles Urban League joins the rest of our community in mourning the loss of a distinguished and honorable public servant, the legendary Nathaniel “Nate” Holden. Holden, a tireless advocate and true fighter for the city of Los Angeles, passed away earlier today. He was 95.
Holden, a dear friend and supporter of the Los Angeles Urban League throughout his service, represented the powerful South Los Angeles 10th District on the L.A. City Council for 16 years, before going on to serve as a California State Senator. His public service career began as assistant chief deputy to County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn. After retiring from 32 years in public office, Holden became a consultant based in Los Angeles, specializing in government affairs.
“We will remember Nate Holden as a pillar of our community who always centered the betterment of Los Angeles in his advocacy and policy pursuits. He was a true man of the people,” Los Angeles Urban League CEO and President Cynthia Mitchell-Heard said today.
In a tribute LA Mayor Karen Bass stated, “Nate Holden leaves behind a legacy of service and strength. Throughout his life, he put the South Los Angeles community front and center.” The city will honor Holden by flying flags at half-staff.
A giant of a man, who left his footprints throughout this city, a performing arts center in the Mid-City area carries his name. Holden’s legacy and commitment to his constituents who put him in office cannot be overstated, as well as the impact he has cemented on our city of Los Angeles.
