We at the Los Angeles Urban League mourn the passing of Dr. James Lawson. We will forever remember him for the indelible service he rendered to this world. He was a friend of the Los Angeles Urban League who frequently attended our annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Awards Gala. We extend our deepest condolences to his family in this moment of their bereavement.

Dr. James Lawson, a champion, teacher, and iconic civil rights leader, made contributions to the world that will continue to inspire generations globally. After studying in India with Mahatama Gandhi, the revered writer and thinker who introduced him to peaceful resistance, Dr. Lawson returned to America and made non-violence resistance his life’s work. Dr. Lawson’s teachings inspired countless activists, including John Lewis and Martin Luther King Jr., emphasizing the power of peaceful resistance in the struggle for equality.

He helped shape civil rights activism in America and his legacy is one of profound courage, wisdom, and dedication to the cause of justice and human dignity. He made a difference in this world.

We are blessed that Dr. James Lawson was a major supporter of the Los Angeles Urban League. We will sorely miss him!
